Wax Jewellery Class Details - This is a one-on-one beginners workshop, hosted in my shared art gallery. We will cover the designing and making of a ring using jeweller’s wax that will be cast into sterling silver. Note! The ring is sent away to be cast and then returned to you finished - this is not something you can take home with you on the day.

This is a very personal and relaxed experience, likely to kickstart a new hobby and is ideal for jewellery enthusiasts, beginners starting out their jewellery journey and visitors who would like a personal keepsake and reminder of their time in Wānaka and Central Otago. The only physical requirements are that you're able to hold a pen firm, have a steady hand and have relatively good close up vision - ring making is fiddly and requires deft fine motor skills.

During the workshop you will carve and shape your ring from a wax blank. Your wax will then be sent away to be cast into sterling silver or bronze and returned to you finished. I'll drop off to you if you live locally, or we'll arrange courier. If you come with an idea, great! If not, no problem. I’ll be able to help you get started making something special. We’ll carve and shape your ring, perfecting your design so that you're happy with it. In a few weeks time, you will have your own very sterling silver ring that you have crafted yourself!

All making materials are provided.

What to bring:

  • Ideas! Though no pressure on this side of things, we will come up with an idea that works for you. I will be in touch following your booking to send you some images/ideas to ponder.
  • A relaxed creative mindset - if this is your first time working with wax things may not go exactly as you initially envisage. It's a fluid medium and part of the creative process is exploration.
  • Rings you like to wear as a bit of inspo, for discussion and reference for sizing.
  • Wear anything you’re comfy in, it’s not too messy but you don’t want to be worried about getting wax on anything special.
  • IMPORTANT! Your glasses if you have trouble seeing things up close. Making rings is fiddly business, you need a very steady hand and to be able to see well and focus on details.
  • H2O drink bottle and food/snacks if you need. There is a food truck on site that generally will be open when you arrive at The Green.

FAQ and things to note!

  • This workshop is for a the making of a ring only. It does not cover stone setting as this involves a lot more time and skill but we can do cast in place gems. Gems and other metals can be discussed but will come at extra cost. Please message me to discuss.
  • You’re of course welcome to make a ring for someone else, however you would need to find out their size prior, or snaffle a ring that fits them and bring this to the workshop!
  • You will have the opportunity to make a second ring if you have time during the 3 hour window.
  • Rings are sent away to be cast and then will be finished by me, this can take up to 2.5 weeks depending on courier delays.
  • The workshop cost covers the tuition time only. You will be charged $8 per gram of silver of your finished piece - this covers the casting costs and my time to finish your ring. Bronze is $4 per gram. Please contact me for an idea of ring sizes/styles and costs if this is a concern. Generally, most people spend an additional $70-$120 on their finished silver ring.
  • Once I have finished your ring I will contact you with final price for payment before sending to you.
  • I will provide you with as much info and guidance as I can so that you can carry on making jewellery at home, if you wish. I teach to share the love of making so welcome as many questions as you have, before, during and after the workshop too.
  • I am able to host a max of 6 people at one time.
  • Once a workshop booking has been made, no refunds or alternate arrangements will be issued to those who cancel in the week (7 days) prior to the workshop.
  • All cancellation refunds will be less the $7 website transaction fee.
